About the Food Closet Ministry

The Food Closet Ministry is very active, serving not only some of FBC’s members, but also a number of people in the community. Food is distributed on a regular basis on the 4th Friday of each month at 12:30 p.m. Jimmie Hollingsworth works with the South County Services on the third and fourth Thursday each month, helping to fill bags for their food distribution. After these bags are filled, the remaining food from the Food Link is divided between all of the churches, who devote their time to help. The food may be canned vegetables, instant potatoes, pasta products, juices, peanut butter, fruits, puddings, granola bars, and other nutritious items. The food from the Food Link is stored in the Food Closet at the church. The day before the food distribution, Jimmie fills one bag for each person expected to pick up food on Friday. At 10:30 a.m. on the distribution day, Jimmie and his wife, Kathy, go to Raley’s and pick up dairy, produce, deli, and bakery goods that have been set aside for them on that day. When people come to the Food Closet, they take one of the bags of staples and choose from the perishables from Raley’s. Food is also available throughout the month for emergency needs.

For Thanksgiving, Jimmie and Kathy prepare bags of food from the Food Closet, along with a turkey, and hand them out a few days before Thanksgiving. Kathy tries to call everyone that is on her list so they know when these bags of food are to be given out.

The church also has walkers, wheel chairs, canes and crutches stored in the Food Closet. These are available to anyone who might need them. The wheel chairs and walkers were donated to the church by the family of Ivan Smith.
